A rare blue diamond has been unearthed in a South African mine which has been the source of some of the most valuable diamonds ever found. The 29.6-carat acorn-sized stone was discovered earlier this month at the Cullinan Diamond Mine near Pretoria.
The mine, owned by Petra Diamonds since 2008, is most famous for being the mine where the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond was discovered in 1905. The largest rough gem diamond ever found, the Cullinan diamond was eventually cut into nine pieces. The largest two - the Great Star of Africa and the Second Star of Africa - are among the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. The mine also produced The Golden Jubilee - at 543 carats, the largest cut and faceted diamond in the world.
A 25.5 carat blue diamond was found in the mine last year and sold for $16.9 million. The latest discovery could be worth even more. Blue diamonds are some of the rarest diamonds in the world, and only make up around 0.1% of all diamonds found every year.
Petra Diamonds has only found four blue diamonds since they took over the Cullinan mine in 2008. The recent find is the most significant blue diamond stone they've ever recovered. The stone is an outstanding vivid blue with extraordinary saturation, tone, and clarity. It has the potential to yield a polished stone of great value and importance. It may well break price records - possible selling for more than $2 million per carat!
