Belated Fall-In 2010 AAR

I went to Fall-In a few weeks back. I didn't run any games, but played in more than I have at a convention for awhile. Unfortunately I got super lazy and didn't carry my camera around to take pictures until the final evening.

Anyway, on Friday I did some shopping and  played in Glenn Kidd's "Assault on Miki-Miki" using the Command Decision ruleset in 15mm. As the Convention had a Marine Corps theme, and I had a great-uncle who died at Tarawa, I felt honor bound to play at least one Marine Corps game. I had a great time playing one of the three Marine Corps commanders. A nice setup and a well thought out game. The rules were easy to learn as I've read through Striker II a few times and the orders rules are very similar (identical). Glenn was also surprised to find out I live about 20min from him. Oh, and the Marines won a minor victory.

Saturday I played in "Road Warriors in the Outback" run by Peter Megginson using the Axles and Alloys rules. I've always wanted to play in a "Road Warrior" game. Again the rules were easy and everyone had a great time. I played a ganger with a dune buggy and a motorcyle. I ran my dune buggy into a large rock, resulting in a spectacular explosion, but not until after I'd done some serious damage on a few occasions that forced two threshold checks that eventually forced the truck to glide to an anti-climatic halt. We all gave a false groan when it was revealed that the truck was full of sand . (SPOILER!). In talking with Peter after the game I learned how cheap the setup for the game was. Besides Matchbox and Gato cars and a few other toy store finds, there were Stan Johanson weapons add ons and motorcycles. I'd always assumed getting into this genre would be expensive, but I'd say there was about $60 of minis on the table and 8 people had an immersive adventure and great time.

Late on Saturday there was "I don't have to be fast, just faster than YOU! Zombies!!!" run by Jerry Acord, using the All Things Zombie rules. Jerry is one of my GZG ECC buddies and ran a very cool game. Gangers vs. Cops trying to salvage as many goods from a town as possible. Again I played a Gang member, "Doc Voodoo" and a few supporting characters. We were very sneaky and managed to get a ton of supplies without attracting much attention. Meanwhile Johnny Law starting shooting fairly quickly (after some bad draws on zombie cards) and spent the game getting chased across town by the mother of all zombie hordes.

Meanwhile, at a nearby table a fellow was running "Battle of Yonkers" from the World War Z book using modified Flames of War rules. I had to run back to my car get my camera to photograph this!

A metric ton of Rebel Minis went into this setup.

Defenders

The oncoming zombie horde!

I was planning on just walking around, but I walked past "Romp, Stomp & Chomp!" and got invited to jump in. Long time readers of this blog (chuckle) may already know of my affinity for Godzilla movies. I just couldn't resist. I opted to be a Godzilla foe (you can be a friend, foe, or member of the JSDF) and picked out Gigan.

Here he is, jumping Godzilla from behind. My victory is short lived as the king of all monsters gives me a huge thrashing after this.

I had a nice conversation with the game master and rules author Dan Fox. It seems his mother took him to a Godzilla film at age 4, very worried that he'd be too scared. He of course loved every minute of it, launching his life time passion for the 31 Godzilla films. Dan's mother passed away when he was 5 and the memory of watching that first Godzilla movie with his mother is obviously still very strong.

Yeah, I don't feel so good. Mind if I just lie down here awhile?

Fortunately the rules are very forgiving and kid friendly. If you want to heal you can voluntarily take yourself out of the game for a turn and come back. You can even choose to be a different monster.

It's Smog Monster and Jet Jaguar! Hey, let's all sing the Jet Jaguar song!
